There are several different ways that you can hold your baby when you are breastfeeding. It is important to examine each one and to learn the proper way to hold them. Try each one and decide for yourself which one you and your baby prefer. Once you have chosen a position it will make those late night feeding so much easier.
This is the most popular position. You need to cradle the baby’s head using the crook of your arm. Sit down in the chair that you use to breastfeeding. Most women use a rocking
chair or something that has a supportive armrests. If you don’t have a comfortable chair than use your bed and stack lots of pillows around your arms.
Put your feet up on an ottoman or other raised up surface to keep you leaning down towards your baby. Now place the baby in your lap and on her side. Her face, stomach, and knees need to be facing you. Tuck her lower arm underneath yours. It might help to place a pillow on your lap and have her laying on that.
Rest her head in the crook of the arm that corresponds to the breast she is feeding from. For example, if she is feeding from your left breast than her head should be in your left arm. Your forearm and hand should be extended out and down her back so that you are supporting her spine, neck, and bottom. Hold her knees to your body so that she is laying horizontally.
This position is often used on babies who were full term and delivered vaginally. It can be a little bit difficult to hold the baby’s mouth to the nipple. You might have to help them find it until they become used to the position. It is best to find a position to use for premature babies because their bodies are not strong enough to support themselves.
